As the holidays draw near and the season of thanksgiving is upon us, the arrival of November reminds me to pause and reflect—with an attitude of gratitude. In the Diverse Janitorial world, we work behind the scenes, transforming spaces from dust and debris into places of business and even beauty. It’s quiet but meaningful work that sometimes goes unnoticed and unacknowledged, but this month I want to shine a light on the people who make it all possible.

Diverse Janitorial is celebrating the completion of one of our recent projects. In October we completed work on the Phase 1A - Terminal 1 (T1) Replacement at San Diego International Airport (SAN).
Project Overview
The new T1 terminal replaced the 58-year-old Terminal 1 and is an extensive improvement in SAN’s passenger experience. The new terminal features expanded gate capacity, faster security, expanded dining and retail, sustainable building practices, and access improvements. Designed to reflect San Diego’s beauty and spirit, the terminal offers light-filled spaces, enriched art installations, and new pathways for bikes and pedestrians. The highlight of the new terminal is the all-glass façade designed by renowned artist James Carpenter called “Luminous Wave,” which is comprised of more than 537 curved, fritted glass panels.
Diverse Janitorial contracted with the Turner-Flatiron joint-venture construction team to complete work for the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. Diverse Janitorial successfully completed multiple final-clean passes throughout the airport, including the baggage claim areas, back-of-house rooms, all conveyor belts (inside and outside the airport), and all carousels inside and outside of Terminal 1. We also provided full window-washing services.
From start to finish, Diverse Janitorial employed laborers from Local 89 LiUNA in San Diego. We strongly believe in local hiring for every project, and it was a privilege to staff this entire project with skilled laborers from the San Diego area.
